You recently suffered trauma to the TMJ. Your joint and jaw hurts, but you are also experiencing pain throughout your body - regional swelling, red or blue skin discoloration, increased or decreased skin temperature, exaggerated pain to typically non-painful stimuli (the face is extremely painful to touch), and limited active range of motion. If you have Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, or CRPS I, your TMD pain could exacerbate it. CRPS cannot improve without reducing the afferent sensory pain, such as TMD pain.
