Dr. Mark A. Piper is a graduate of Harvard College, Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Vanderbilt Medical School. He completed residency training in General Surgery and Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery at Vanderbilt University. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery and a member of 20 professional medical and dental organizations. Major awards include Harvard Gold Medal, Hatton Award of the International Association of Dental Research for cleft palate and wound healing studies, and induction into Omicron Kappa Upsilon - Harvard Chapter. He is a contributor to more than 400 publications and presentations throughout the world. He is credited with the development of three major methods for the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular joint derangements: doppler auscultation, differential arthrography and microsurgical reconstruction. He has developed the Piper Classification of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders, which is widely used in clinical practice. His current research interests include the diagnosis of temporomandibular problems through non-invasive modalities and treatment of complex TMJ diseases and reconstruction of facial deformities related to TMJ degeneration. He is credited with developing surgical methods for treating avascular necrosis of the TMJ.
